Hashtags. Those cute little pound signs that have become all the rage these days. It’s there for all to see in all leading social networking sites. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram…you will find them everywhere attached at the beginning of a word or a series of words. However, we know, from personal experience that many (although the numbers are sharply decreasing) are stumped when they encounter this symbol on a social media page for the first time. Hashtags are pretty simple really. They basically turn every word that is used with a hashtag into a link that is easily searchable via the internet.

Speaking of Instagram, using hashtags just ups the chances of your photos getting viewed. Higher the number of your hashtags, better the chances of one of the keywords used by you to be featured in searches around the world. Contrary to this only your followers will be able to view your photos if you do not use hashtags. With hashtags what you do is letting your photo get included in a progressive system of photos which have used the same keywords.

For example, if you are a landscape photographer, using the hashtag ’#landscape’ will allow you to view landscape photographs uploaded and tagged #landscape. Similarly typing in ’#bridal’ or ’#PreWedding’ for wedding photography or hashtags like ’#fashionista’ and ’#vintage’  etc for fashion photography will give you hundreds of results in the respective genre.

Did you know: you are allowed to use up to 30 hashtags for each #Instagram post.

It is not uncommon to see that certain hashtags get used more often than others. For example hashtags like #instaupload #instapic #nofilter are seen quite frequently. This, however, does not at all mean that these words are more effectual. In fact, more often than not this results in photographs with such hashtags getting lost in a myriad of photos and probably never being found.

Lastly a few words on how to write searchable hashtags. You cannot use spaces while writing hashtags. For hashtags which contain multiple words, you can write all the words in an unbroken string using uppercase letters if you want to distinguish between the words.
